After the Sting
Taking Care of Your New Tattoo
Your tattoo is more than just ink—it’s art etched into your skin. To ensure it heals beautifully and lasts a lifetime, proper aftercare is essential. At Skin & Ink, we want your fresh piece to look as vibrant in ten years as it does today. Here’s everything you need to know about caring for your new tattoo:
1. The First 24 Hours
Leave the bandage on:
Your artist will cover your tattoo to protect it from bacteria. Keep it on for at least 2–4 hours.
Wash with care:
Gently clean the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your hands – never a washcloth or sponge.
Pat dry:
Use a clean paper towel to pat the area dry. Avoid rubbing or scratching.
2. Apply a Healing Ointment
After washing and drying, apply a thin layer of recommended tattoo aftercare ointment (like Bepanthen or a tattoo-specific cream).
Avoid petroleum-based products unless your artist suggests it. Too much ointment can suffocate the skin – less is more.
3. Keep It Clean and Moisturized
- Clean the area twice a day for the first week.
- Apply ointment or lotion lightly until the tattoo stops flaking (typically 7–14 days).
- Never let your tattoo dry out or crack.
4. Avoid These Common Mistakes 🚫
- No direct sunlight – UV rays can fade and damage fresh ink.
- No swimming – Avoid pools, saunas, oceans, and baths for at least 2 weeks.
- No scratching or picking – As your tattoo heals, it may itch or scab. Let it do its thing naturally. Picking can lead to scars or patchy ink.
5. Long-Term Care
Even after healing, keep your tattoo looking sharp:
- Moisturize regularly to keep your skin healthy.
- Use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when exposing your tattoo to the sun.
- Stay hydrated and eat skin-supporting foods like those rich in omega-3 and vitamin E.
